ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
Double Feature presents a dynamic collection of 30 original Blaxploitation-era movie posters—vivid, stylized works that merge graphic design, film history, and Black cultural expression. These posters are more than nostalgic memorabilia; they are vibrant artistic artifacts that reflect a pivotal moment in Black cinema when Black heroes, heroines, and anti-heroes claimed space on the big screen with power, style, and agency.
The exhibition’s title plays on the traditional movie house “double feature,” but also gestures toward the layered artistry of this genre—pairing the visual creativity of poster design with the cinematic narratives they promote. Together, these works tell stories of defiance, cool, resistance, and resilience in Black communities during the 1970s. Posters for films like Shaft, Cleopatra Jones, The Mack, and Blacula not only advertised films; they shaped icons, created aesthetics, and inspired generations of artists, musicians, and storytellers.
By elevating these posters to the gallery wall, Double Feature challenges traditional definitions of art. At ADAMA, we are committed to expanding access to creative expression and affirming that art is not only found in galleries or museums—it lives in our homes, our memories, and our communities. The familiar imagery of these posters offers an entry point for audiences to reimagine what art is and where it can be found.
This exhibition also invites reflection on how visual culture informs identity. The bold imagery, provocative taglines, and dynamic compositions of these posters are not just promotional tools—they are expressions of a people reclaiming narrative power. In revisiting these iconic images, Double Feature celebrates the art of Black storytelling in all its forms and reinforces ADAMA’s mission to make art relevant, accessible, and resonant.
Through this exhibition, we aim to spark conversation, connection, and cultural pride—reminding us that art is not a luxury, but a language we all share.
