Dr. Fahamu Pecou
United States, Panama, Costa Rica, Martinique, Cameroon
My family’s origins are a prime example of the movement of African descended people throughout the Caribbean and Southern U.S. I am excited about ADAMA because I am living proof of the Diaspora.
My work as an artist has always centered on dispelling stereotypes and myths about contemporary Black subjectivity, but more and more I am drawn to the diverse influences of Africa made manifest in Black corporeal expression, art, music, fashion and much more.
Little known fact: My lineage was nearly erased from the earth when Mt. Pelee exploded in 1902 on the island of Martinique. All but two members of my family were killed; my great-uncle who was in France at the time, and my great-grandfather who had set out to Costa Rica in search of opportunities.
